John Doe …on X @ 35

HOLY SHIT ! ! Thirty-five years of punk rock is shocking ! ! It’s not like that’s all we’ve done but there have only been a few short breaks in the rough & tumble action that started back in nineteen and seventy-seven.

People everywhere want to know what is was like in Los Angeles in 1977 but honestly there is no way to re-create that feeling or time. All of LA was in a state of decay & disrepair. The second ‘O’ on the HOLLYWOOD sign had fallen down. Venice was filled w/ burned out Viet Nam vets & hippie drug casualties, the canals were fetid swamps but along side all that were the greatest thrift stores imaginable. Farrah Fawcett was the poster girl. There was still a restaurant in the shape of a brown derby hat.  Hollywood Blvd. hosted all the rest of the rejects, drug addicts & people on the make, (at least that has remained the same).

The pieces of the punk rock chronicles that I’ve read play fast & loose w/ the facts & only sensationalize events that we all thought were cool & meaningful. It definitely was a time where the possibilities seemed endless, everyone involved made a contribution & in retrospect was a beautifully naïve era. Few of us thought it would last more than a couple of years & in a way we were right.

By the time Black Flag recorded Wasted in 1978 things had already started to change. “Hardcore” was rearing it’s ugly head. The violence became more real, people developed real addictions, became junkies & died rather than the teenage/mid-twenty angst that it all began w/. Everyone who has survived should take just a small measure of pride in being part of a scene that still carries influence. Maybe we should make a t-shirt that reads; “I survived the LA punk rock scene”.

One thing I know is that we, in the band X, are incredibly grateful that we’re still here, able to play loud & fast, make a living at something we love & still do well, get to tour the world in support of Pearl Jam, play the Hollywood Park Race Track, put our hands in cement on Sunset Blvd., maybe even have our t-shirt worn by the villain of a big time movie, and the list will, hopefully, go on & on & on.

THANKS FOR YOUR VIGILANT SUPPORT

yours,

JD (I hope the rest of the band agrees)

Note: X is currently touring Europe with friends Pearl Jam. Amsterdam today and then on to Rock Wertcher 2012 and… More shows are being added throughout Fall 2012. details coming soon on shows page.

This whole thing started again with an In-Store…..

Actually we don’t have the exact date of that infamous Tower Records Sunset signing in “Winter 1997″, but we do know when our next in-store is – May 11 in Portland!

Our friends at Jackpot Records in Portland Oregon asked if we’d stop by before our show at Crystal Ballroom and say hello, – maybe sign a few things…

“Sure, thanks for asking us and CONGRATULATIONS on your 15 Year Anniversary!

“It was in 1997 that Isaac Slusarenko decided to take his love of music to the people by opening the original Jackpot Records location in Southeast Portland.”  We are not sure if it was “Winter 1997″, but we like to think maybe it was.

With the music industry struggling to survive, both Jackpot Records (& friend Jackpot ! Recording)  are still thriving. They have both become cornerstones of the Portland music community and have helped spread the gospel of great sounds the world over.

We look forward to supporting Jackpot Records in-person and meeting some new people.  ~X~

X-35..tomorrow – the poster series…NOW

[All posters, but 1 are here] X-35 Tour kicks off Friday…and marks 35 years since X became X.

Here we are again…another tour. It feels like a small insurgent movement…not quite a full scale military exercise as it’s really just the band, the crew & the vans. lol!  Still, there’s a lot of nuts & bolts to handle before each run -not the least of which is connecting with talented people across the country to create each tour’s poster series.

Art in all forms has always been a part of X since the beginning. We’re happy that the ‘ol inner-web gives us a way to reach out to the art community and has expanded our art program to -almost- every show.  The X-35 Tour Poster Series is starting to roll out and we’re pretty excited to share them with you. HERE – RIGHT NOW – before you even get to the show!

A special thanks from the band to each and everyone of you artists for making us and the world look a little bit better  ~X~

Notes: click ‘permalink’ to comment on posters & …The X-35 Tour will be adding shows & posters throughout 2012. We’ll let you know when we update this post via FB & Twitter

Record Store Day 4/21 – for the love of independents

Today is the 5th Record Store Day. A day to celebrate the independently owned record store and supporting the commitment to keeping the vinyl market alive. You meet some of the nicest people in record stores. Here’s DJ at one of his favorite’s – Amoeba.

From the people behind Record Store Day: “If you’re in a store today, find a staff member, tell them what the store means to you. It will mean the world to them. We started all this to shine a spotlight on the stores, don’t take yours for granted.”
Thanks for your support! ~X-35~

we’re giving some shirts to our friends…

[UPDATE: The box of shirts is now gone! Thanks to everyone who gave this shirt a new home and for the support.]

In 2006, X went on tour with Rollins Band and to commemorate the tour Shepard Fairey made one of our all-time favorite X designs.

We found a box of these girl shirts and we want to say thanks by giving 1 shirt away in each merch order that asks for one until the shirts are all gone.

(also thanks to the guys at Moonlight Graham for helping out & re-programming the store.)

This design is too good to sit in a box! For everyone who bought a poster or shirt from that tour – congrats it rocks & you have good taste.

PS- Thanks again to Sheperd Fairey – amazing artist and friend.  ~X~

X is heading to Europe – thanks again Pearl Jam!

It’s true! X is “crossing the pond” to tour Europe –

What can we say – South America rocked, the fans were great,  the places were exotic and PJ is amazing! We are ecstatic to be invited out again!

The quick version of the tour… UK – NETHERLANDS – BELGIUM – FRANCE – CZECH REPUBLIC – GERMANY – SWEDEN – NORWAY – DENMARK.  See the full Europe Show Schedule - here.

SoWill X ever tour Europe on their own?

Gang – we are asked this A LOT here and on Facebook.  X would love to tour more in Europe. We’ve tried to get back there over the years, but it has never worked out.  Last October, we made it all the way to Boston, but when the water came up to the van’s windows..Exene made us turn around.  [HA!]

In reality it starts with you! Your local promoter has to believe people will come to the show for them to make us an offer. We are guests, we have to be invited. So if you want to see X on their own, start making some noise! Tell your local promoter that you really want to see X and that you have friends that want to see X. Then you have to show up of course! That’s really all there is to it. We hope to see you all on this tour!

Heading north for Xmas…
