40TH ANNIVERSARY OF ICONIC LOS ANGELES ALBUM

X_729068175360_o.jpg

LA’s favorite punk band will celebrate and commemorate the 40th anniversary of the ground-breaking album, Los Angeles, with a special show at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles. The revolutionary Ray Manzarek produced the album, originally released on April 26, 1980, will be performed in its’ entirety during the April 25th show. In 2019 X reissued and remastered their first four classic albums via their collaboration with Fat Possum Records. Los Angeles (1980), Wild Gift (1981), Under The Big Black Sun (1982) and More Fun In The New World (1983). In addition, the band recently re-entered the recording studio for the first time since 1984. A collection of original songs was recorded with producer Rob Schnapf, release plans are pending. Formed in 1977, X quickly established themselves as one of the best bands in the first wave of LA's flourishing punk scene; becoming legendary leaders of a punk generation. Featuring vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer DJ Bonebrake, their debut 45 was released on the seminal Dangerhouse label in 1978, followed by seven studio albums released from 1980-1993. X's first two studio albums, Los Angeles and Wild Gift are ranked by Rolling Stone among the top 500 greatest albums of all time. Over the years, the band has released several critically acclaimed albums, topped the musical charts with regularity and performed their iconic hits on top television shows such as Letterman and American Bandstand. In 2017, the band celebrated their 40th anniversary in music with a Grammy Museum exhibit opening, a Proclamation from the City of Los Angeles and being honored at a Los Angeles Dodgers game, where Exene threw out the first pitch and John Doe sang the National Anthem. The band continues to tour with the original line-up: Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake.

Earlier in 2019, the original foursome - Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebrake went into the studio together to record fresh material for the first time since 1985’s “Ain’t Love Grand." Five songs were recorded over the course of two days with producer Rob Schnapf. The first of these new songs is the recorded version of an older X song, "Delta 88 Nightmare," which previously was only included as a bonus track on the 2001 reissue of "Los Angeles" in demo form - never as a fully recorded and mixed track. The song is available today as a 7" with the flip side being the newly recorded "Cyrano de Berger's Back".

X! Live in Latin America

Here's the link to kickstarter & Here’s the story… In November of 2011, X was fortunate to be touring Latin America as the opening band for Pearl Jam’s South America Tour. What a life-changing and mind-altering experience it was! Our first show was in Sao Paulo, Brazil. We had no idea what the crowds would think of us, and we were really surprised when we started playing that first show.

PJ’s devoted fans were so welcoming and enthusiastic! We were playing stadiums, and sometimes it felt like a club. The early punk days in Los Angeles (and really, all the scenes in the U.S.) were about intensity as much as music. No barriers between band and people in the crowd. It was wild!

And on Thanksgiving, in Mexico City, playing and singing Los Angeles, while earthquakes rattled the Foro Sol Stadium stage, it felt that same way. We had that “this is crazy, this is only going to happen once so remember it and enjoy it” feeling. While we toured in South America, Costa Rica, and Mexico, another fortunate thing happened. Pearl Jam’s sound engineer recorded all our shows, and gave us these incredible, professional recordings to use.

But we didn’t know what to do with the recordings! We didn’t want to give them to a record label, or license the songs, we didn’t even know if we could. We were apprehensive the songs would just disappear into somebody’s pocket and never be heard from again. (We’ve had a few bad experiences…)

One day a friend suggested we release the tracks via Kickstarter. We just needed someone great and amazing to mix the songs….

We asked Rob Schnapf (Beck, Fidlar, Booker T., Elliot Smith) if he would produce, engineer and mix these for us. When he said yes, we decided to give this a go!!

Thank you for staying with us the last 40 years! And thank you for funding our project. If we surpass our goal (which includes mixing & engineering, making & manufacturing rewards, and shipping & handling) we will use the money to keep our 2 vans running and keep ourselves touring. Maybe even get some matching outfits tailor-made…. Gotta come up with something special for the 41st year!!

X: 40 Years of Punk in Los Angeles exhibit at LA LIVE October 13

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Los Angeles punk rock band X, the GRAMMY Museum® at L.A. LIVE will open a new exhibit titled X: 40 Years of Punk in Los Angeles on Friday, October 13. On display on the Museum's fourth floor, the exhibit will give visitors a glimpse into how X's four original members – Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebrake – quickly established the band as one of the best in the first wave of L.A.'s flourishing punk scene.

"An X exhibit in a museum? Unbelievable! We are honored, dumbstruck and so grateful that all four original members are here to celebrate and share our history and 40th anniversary. It’s a very long way from a basement on Hollywood Blvd (The Masque) to the GRAMMY Museum, but we feel that we bring with us all the punks from then and now. We are just the representatives for what has gone before and what is still to come in the City of Angels." — Exene, Billy, DJ, and John.

Items on display will include:

·       Original instruments and gear played by the band

·       Handwritten lyrics and notebooks by Exene Cervenka and John Doe

·       Clothing and other personal items

·       Original concert flyers for L.A. shows

·       Rare photographs and artwork by Exene

·       X: The Unheard Music film, and more!

"We are thrilled to be hosting the official 40th anniversary exhibit for one of Los Angeles' most influential punk rock acts," says GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Scott Goldman. "While most will think of New York when they think of the punk movement, the genre was also developing an impact on the West Coast, of which X played an integral role in developing, and we are so excited to tell that story."

"This exhibit will place a much-deserved spotlight on the history of punk music in Los Angeles and one of the bands who played a vital role on the genre's impact on Southern California," says GRAMMY Museum Curator Nwaka Onwusa. "Visitors will get a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the development of X's career and how, after 40 years, they remain one of the few bands to continue to tour with all four original members."

X: 40 Years of Punk in Los Angeles will be on display through Feb. 25, 2018.

CINDY WASSERMAN

Cindy-Wasserman1

EXENE CERVENKA OF X POSTS LETTER

AT THE SWEET RELIEF MUSICIANS FUND WEBSITE

ABOUT THE CREATION OF THE CINDY WASSERMAN FUND TO HELP WITH CINDY’S MEDICAL EXPENSES

Exene Cervenka of X has posted a letter--at the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund website--about her friend and musical associate Cindy Wasserman of the band Dead Rock West:

"Cindy Wasserman, the singer you have heard on so many other artists’ recordings, needs your help. Recently diagnosed with breast cancer, Cindy still finished her touring obligations (with her singing partner Frank Drennen in Dead Rock West), opening all the shows X played over the summer and fall. Her captivating presence was felt by all who heard her voice; so warm, haunting, and timeless.  Dead Rock West then toured with Phil and Dave Alvin. All the while, Cindy never let on that she was ill. She wanted the audiences and her fellow tour mates to have a great time, a meaningful time, a joyful time.

Cindy Wasserman is that extremely rare combination of talent, grace, beauty and heart.  She works so hard to make you sound good on your recordings, and she sounds so good you wonder why it’s not you singing the harmony parts on her songs!

All of us in the music community, whether musicians, managers, promoters, singers, songwriters, sound people, everyone, are all grateful to have Cindy in our lives. She is truly loved, not just for her voice, but for the generosity, humor, positivity, and love and caring friendship she gives us. She is a source of a lot of light in this world.  That’s why to know Cindy, is to love Cindy.

Please help Cindy get through a very difficult time by supporting her now."

--Sincerely,

Exene Cervenka

PARTIAL LIST OF ARTISTS CINDY HAS PERFORMED WITH:

Exene Cervenka DJ Bonebrake Peter Case Mark Olson Rob Wasserman

Eddie Vedder The Sadies Steve Poltz Joe Henry John Doe Dave Alvin

Rickie Lee Jones Bob Weir Grant Lee Phillips Mike Peters Duane Jarvis

The Young Dubliners Elliot Easton Nels Cline

Singer and sweet light of a human being Cindy Wasserman, a contributor to records by Rickie Lee Jones, Marc Olson, John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Grant Lee Phillips, Peter Case and to her own hard working band Dead Rock West, was diagnosed in August 2015 with Breast Cancer. Anyone who knows or has met Cindy at shows or in private over the years will attest that the first thing they all remember (after marveling at that otherworldly voice of hers) is her infectious smile and warm hearted hugs. Never the rock n roll diva, she has spent her life supporting, encouraging and bringing a little light to other people with her music and her hugs. Now she needs our help.

She is in the early stages of treatment for this disease but her health and healing recovery look very very positive. This has understandably been a shock to her and her family but she has continued to tour hard this year. With over 100 dates with Dead Rock West, John Doe, X and Dave and Phil Alvin this year the shows particularly since August have brought her a whole lot of strength and joy that will contribute to her healing. She has meanwhile been carefully educating herself on her treatment options, meeting with professionals during tour breaks and building up her own body’s strength to prepare to enter treatment as soon as she gets home from her final tour date on Nov 21st.

Her expenses, however, are already mounting and her insurance is not covering much of it. We are asking you, her friends, fans and fellow music lovers, to get involved, contribute what you can and pass the word on to friends and family. Please help bring a little light to this sweethearted songbird for all the music and light that she has brought to us all of these years. Anything small or large helps immensely and we as well as her family and friends are hugely grateful for your support. Cindy herself says thank you so much for the outpouring already and that she is fully committed to a complete recovery and to recording the next Dead Rock West record as planned in 2016, with John Doe in the Producer’s chair this time!

About Sweet Relief in general:

Since 1994 Sweet Relief Musicians Fund has provided assistance to all types of career musicians who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability, or age-related problems. Grant recipients include recording artists, club and session musicians, composers & songwriters from across the country. Every musical genre is represented including poprockjazzclassicalcountrybluesreggaehip hop and all styles in between. Sweet Relief has served the music community by helping musicians with medical and living expenses including insurance premiums, prescriptions, medical treatment and operative procedures, housing costs, food costs, utilities and other basic necessities.

About Sweet Relief’s Directed Artist Program:

Over the past several years Sweet Relief has developed a much needed and previously unavailable program to assist a substantially under-served constituency. Some artists face such overwhelming financial and personal distress when major illness or injury is coupled with a complete lack of, or grossly under-insured, health plan. In many of these cases, treatment for cancer, brain injury, stroke and MS can accrue expenses reaching several hundred thousands of dollars or more. Our organization takes on the role of organizer, administrator, advocate, event planner, and media partner to bring together family, friends, industry partners and fans when an overwhelming financial obstacle is encountered by the most unfortunate artist. We call this our Directed Artist Program.

Our Very Own XMas Miracle! Billy Zoom to Play XMas Shows!

X XmasX ANNOUNCE ZOOM TO RETURN FOR ANNUAL“A FAMILY X-MAS” HOLIDAY TOUR

Tour Will See the Return of BILLY ZOOM to the Stage Following Cancer Treatment – Our Own “Xmas Miracle”

(Los Angeles – October 2015) X - THE Los Angeles Punk Leaders have announced their annual Holiday “X-Mas” Shows! Beginning with two shows in San Diego the day after Thanksgiving. The band will follow up with four nights at The Roxy in Los Angeles and one more in OC before heading north. Shows are scheduled for San Francisco, Seattle and Portland, ending their holiday tour with a special New Year’s Eve show at The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills. Opening on all dates, except for New Years Eve, will be Mike Watt and the Secondmen.

The BEST news on this year’s annual holiday tour?? Billy Zoom - the legendary guitarist for the seminal punk band, is planning to rejoin his longtime bandmates on stage, following his medical treatment for bladder cancer this past summer. When it was announced that Zoom would be sidelined his summer in order to undergo urgent treatment, his bandmates and X fans rallied around him, raising funds to help support Zoom and his family during the treatment process. Zoom is currently on break from the chemo treatment and ready to bring his infamous Cheshire grin back to stage left, where he belongs!

Formed in 1977, X quickly established themselves as one of the best bands in LA's flourishing first wave punk scene. Featuring vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer DJ Bonebrake, their debut 45 was released on the seminal Dangerhouse label in 1978. While these songs were later re-recorded for their second album, the versions on Adult Books / We're Desperate reveal X's raw talent for totally sincere songwriting and stripped-down rock n' roll. This past April, the band re-issued that first single, in its original 7-inch format, as limited edition colored vinyl.

The original line-up of X remains John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom, and D.J. Bonebrake.

IMMEDIATE TREATMENT TO CONTINUE – ZOOM WILL STILL PERFORM AT ORANGE COUNTY ALBUM PLAY SHOWS THIS WEEKEND

REPLACEMENT TO BE NAMED FOR JULY-AUGUST DATES SO X CAN CONTINUE WITH THE TOUR IN SUPPORT OF ZOOM

(Los Angeles, CA – July 9, 2015)  Legendary guitarist, punk legend, and all-around nice guy, Billy Zoom, has been diagnosed with cancer.   Yesterday, Zoom was given the news that he has an aggressive form of bladder cancer and immediate treatment is necessary to fight the disease.  The 67-year-old musician/producer/electronics wiz will begin chemo treatment next week.

In early 2010, Zoom revealed that he had been successfully treated for prostate cancer.

X and Zoom are committed to this weekend’s 4-album play shows at Orange County’s The Observatory.  Joining X for these shows will be The Blasters and Mike Watt.

X will continue with their previously announced July and August mid-west and east coast tour dates as planned in support of Billy and his family.  A replacement for Zoom will be announced shortly.

X and manager, Mike Rouse, have begun a fund to help Zoom with his upcoming medical costs.

Statement from X:

In the music community, we all take turns helping each other & have since the beginning. Punk rock and benefits always went hand in hand: you name the cause, and the bands and fans will be there. Now it's our turn to help Billy Zoom, the wittiest, smartest, nicest, best guitar player & friend I know. I would do anything to help him get better, help take care of his family, and lessen his woes. Billy has begun chemo treatment at Cedars Sinai for Bladder cancer. He has a long road ahead of him but we are confident he's beat cancer once and he'll do it again!

Please keep Billy in your prayers and send some positive energy his way! Donating a few bucks will help take away some of his financial stress and worry. It's the punk rock thing to do.
